Patching a Drywall Hole: What DIY Gets Right (and Wrong)

Small holes: filler and patience
Nail holes and small dents only need lightweight spackle, a light sand and paint. The mistake is over-filling, which leaves a bump you'll see in raking light.
Fist-size holes need backing
Anything bigger than a couple of inches needs support — a mesh patch or a piece of new drywall screwed to backing. Filling a big hole with compound alone will crack.
Why patches show
Texture and sheen. Feathering compound well past the repair, matching the wall texture and priming before paint are what make a patch disappear.
