Handyman or Contractor? How to Tell Which One You Need
The short version: size, permits and licensing. Here's how to sort your list before you start making calls.
Fix-It Fox TeamHandyman technicians, Lexington KY
Start with the size of the job
Handymen are built for variety: a dozen small repairs across a house, or one focused project like new trim in a room. Contractors are built for scale — additions, full remodels, new roofs — where one company manages permits, subcontractors and inspections.
Check whether the work needs a license or permit
In Kentucky, new electrical circuits, most plumbing beyond simple fixture swaps and HVAC work generally require licensed trades, and structural changes usually require permits. A good handyman will tell you when a job crosses that line.
Group the small stuff
If your list is mostly patches, adjustments, installs and touch-ups, one handyman visit is usually the fastest and most cost-effective way to clear it.
A quick checklist
- Does it change wiring, plumbing lines or structure? → licensed contractor
- Is it repair, replacement or installation of something existing? → handyman
- Is it a long list of small items? → handyman
