Seal the envelope
Check exterior caulk at windows, doors and trim. Cracked or missing caulk lets water in, and Central Kentucky's freeze-thaw cycles make every gap a little bigger each year.
Doors and weatherstripping
If you can see daylight around an exterior door or feel a draft, the weatherstripping or door sweep is worn out. It's an inexpensive fix you'll notice on the next heating bill.
Outdoor wood
Walk your deck and fence. Soft boards, loose railings and leaning posts are better fixed now than after a winter of wet weather.
Safety
- Test smoke and CO detectors
- Replace batteries (or detectors past their rated life)
- Make sure railings are solid before icy weather
