Sump Pump Maintenance Checklist Before Storm Season
Spring storms are when sump pumps fail. Ten minutes of checking now can save a flooded basement later.

Test it
Pour a bucket of water into the pit. The float should rise, the pump should start, empty the pit and shut off on its own.
Clean the pit and inlet
Silt, gravel and debris can jam the float or clog the intake screen. Unplug the pump before reaching in.
Check the discharge line
Make sure the line outside isn't crushed, clogged or frozen, and that it carries water well away from the foundation.
Consider a battery backup
- Storms often knock out power right when the pump is needed most
- A backup pump and an alarm add peace of mind
- Replace backup batteries on schedule
